DESCRIPTION

This is our first commercial batch of West Cider (last year we made about 50l) and is definitely on the more funky end of the spectrum (we will have some pretty clean, focused, classic ciders later in the year). Mid February saw unseasonal and pretty wild wind and rain rip through a lot of the North Island which meant that much of our New Plymouth crop ended up on the ground a little earlier than we would have liked… these are colloquially referred to as windfall apples. We milled, pressed and fermented these but at only 5% natural alcohol they lacked a little bit of depth so we decided to age them on Chardonnay skins from the Petane Vineyard. This imparted acid, tannin, alcohol and a bit of wild funk. The result is delicious, an effervescent acid-driven cider with lots of fresh apple and a hint of feijoa.
