Mirae Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023 (By James Suckling)

750ml

Description

The first Mirae Vineyard Pinot Noir, by James Suckling’s Mirae Vineyard in Martinborough, New Zealand, was made from a wet 2023 vintage, yielding about 2,000 vines planted to old-vine clones 5 and 6. It features a medium red color, notes of spice and cedar, baked cherries, and forest earth, with a balanced palate and a medium-bodied, elegant finish.

Vinification & Vine History
  • Vintage:

The 2023 vintage was notably wet, resulting in more vigorous growth and healthier grapes than the previous year.

  • Vineyard:

The 1.8-hectare Mirae Vineyard was established in 1986, with the first harvest including ungrafted clone 6 and old-vine clone 5 from vines planted around 1988.

  • Winemaking:

Grapes were brought to the Ata Rangi winery for spontaneous fermentation. Some of the batch was destemmed and aged in terracotta amphorae, while the rest was fermented partially whole cluster in open-top bins.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: A medium red.
  • Aromas: Attractive notes of spice, cedar, baked cherries, and forest earth.
  • Palate: A well-balanced, medium-bodied wine with ripe tannins, balanced acidity, and an elegant finish.
