2011 “The Obsidian” Reserve Tasting Notes

Historically, this wine was praised for its elegance over raw power. At 15 years old, it is drinking at its absolute peak.

• The Nose: Highly aromatic and “Bordeaux-esque.” Expect a complex mix of redcurrant, dried rose petals, and graphite. The higher percentage of Cabernet Franc brings a lovely “sous bois” (forest floor) and savory herb character that is more pronounced than in the 2008 or 2010 vintages.

• The Palate: Leaner and more athletic than the “powerhouse” years. It features blackberry, plum skin, and black olive flavors. The tannins are fine and silky, and the wine is noted for its vibrant acidity, which has allowed it to age gracefully without becoming heavy or “muddy.”

• The Finish: Clean, persistent, and savory, with a touch of cedar and cigar box from the French oak.
