Prosper Maufoux, who was a notary by trade, left his practice to give his life over to his passion for wine. In 1860 he set up his own firm in Santenay, a Burgundian village in the heart of the vineyards in Southern Cote d’Or.

Perhaps because of his name, the move would prove auspicious as the winery went from strength to strength. Today Prosper Maufoux is looked after by Eric Piffault, another whose family is deeply involved in Burgundy’s tradition of winemaking. His great great grandmother, Marie Ambal founded Veuve Ambal, one of France’s great sparkling wine houses. With his customary upbeat spirit Eric has brought a new energy to Prosper Maufoux and reinvigorated the wines with the singular goal of quality. Nadine Gublin, the first female Winemaker of the Year has joined the project and it is proving to be a winning collaboration. Burgundy has a long tradition of producing great wines, and at its heart are those of Prosper Maufoux.
