Description
Tasting Notes
Deeply expressive of place, the 2020 Madre Syrah is a powerful wine with dark berry and black plum aromas, and notes of cocoa, tobacco, spice and black pepper. The silky palate has excellent depth and intensity, with fine, grippy tannins and a lingering smoky finish.
VINTAGE NOTES
2020 was an outstanding growing year in the Bay of Islands, with low rainfall over the ripening months, allowing each block to be harvested at the optimal ripeness. The grapes were hand-picked from the vineyard’s original Syrah planting, on 9 and 12 March 2020, with a yield of 3.5 tonnes per hectare. The wine was fermented in small oak open-top vats with approx 50% whole clusters, then pressed to 66 percent new French oak barriques. After 20 months ageing, the wine was blended and bottled.
Reviews
95/100 Bob Campbell, Master of Wine.
Dense, elegant Syrah. Fine grained, textural red that will clearly benefit from bottle ag. High energy, sophisticated wine.
94/100 Andrea Pritzker, Master of Wine.
Opens with bright red plum and a twist of spicy cracked pepper. Medium-bodied with hints of white blossom and silky tannins. Still slightly tight and firm at this stage. Will benefit from a year or two in the bottle to reveal its full potential.
5 stars Michael Cooper.
Likely to flourish for at least a decade, it is mouth filling and supple with … a very finely textured lasting finish. A classy, very youthful red, it shows great finesse.
94/100 James Suckling.
Very attractive Syrah with slate, graphite, iodine, blackberry, and plum aromas, following through to a medium body with polished and medium, round tannins that deliver a lovely textured finish. Some bark and mushroom at the end. A decadent and flavorful Syrah
