Macallan’s ‘Double Cask’ 18 Year Old was matured for almost two decades in a combination of American and European oak – all oloroso seasoned. Whisky Maker, Kirsteen Campbell’s notes suggest this year the sherry input could be more profound than ever, describing aromas and flavours of “Caramelised ginger, Christmas cake fruit, mulled wine spices, dark Jamaican gingerbread, sticky toffee pudding, crème Brûlée and orange zest.” What’s more, the colour of the whisky is about as dark as the regular ‘sherry cask’ 18 year old. Invariably on the short list of single malt aficionados, these annual releases are already catching the attention of collectors. 43% Alc./Vol.
