Appearance: Deep garnet with a noticeable brick-orange or amber rim, showing its age.
-
The Nose: Expect the primary fruit to have faded into the background. You’ll likely find complex "forest floor" aromas: dried tobacco leaf, old leather, cedar wood, and a hint of savoury soy or mushroom. There may be lingering traces of dried currants or plum jam.
-
The Palate: The tannins, which would have been quite "firm and tight" in its youth, should now be completely silky and resolved. It will likely feel medium-bodied with savoury spice, earthy undertones, and a dried herb (thyme/rosemary) finish.

Condition Check: Unlike the 1997, which might be "on its last legs," the 1999 was a more robust vintage. However, at nearly 30 years old, the wine is fragile. It will likely lose its aromatics within 30–60 minutes of being decanted.
